Arizona Luminaria has published ads from local businesses and nonprofit partners since its start in 2022 as a means of paying for high-quality local journalism.

You’ll start to see more paid advertising on the website soon, including some public-service announcements and advertising from political candidates. Arizona Luminaria has added a new policy to start allowing clearly labeled paid messages from candidates, said co-founder Becky Pallack.

The new policy says political ads must be:

  • In alignment with Arizona Luminaria’s mission of promoting civic engagement and civil, informed discourse.
  • Affirmative. We don’t accept attack ads, ads that are “against” something or someone, or ads that include the unauthorized use of another person’s likeness.
  • Clearly labeled as advertisements. The person or group who paid for the ad must be clearly identified.

“We want to make Arizona Luminaria a resource that helps readers take action, hold their elected officials to account, vote and understand complex issues. We’re publishing voter guides and stories about important races like the U.S. Senate seat,” Pallack said. “Political ads are one of the many ways voters get the information they need to make decisions about their votes.”

Financial supporters of Arizona Luminaria — including donors and advertisers — have no influence over what stories are covered, Pallack said. Read more about Arizona Luminaria’s journalistic ethics policies.
