A nonpartisan candidate forum for Tucson Unified School District Governing Board seats is planned for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, at the CWA Local 7000 Union Hall, 7820 E. Broadway. Confirmed candidates are Skye Fernandez, Tre’Davon Rhodes, Val Romero and Pilar Acosta Ruiz, and the event is free and open to the public, hosted by the League of Women Voters of Southern Arizona, AFSCME Local 449 and CWA Local 7000. Details.

The Southern Arizona College & Career Night is Tuesday, Sept. 29, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Tucson Convention Center. Students and families can connect with colleges, employers and training programs. The event is free and advance registration is required.
University of Arizona graduate and undergraduate students can earn a $1,000 stipend by participating in PFAS research (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, often called “forever chemicals”) through the DESERT-PFAS Student Grand Challenge. Students can join one of four teams led by faculty or local experts. The four challenges include: developing guidelines to help industries manage the risk of PFAS contamination; improving groundwater quality and service; improving health outcomes through water and land use management; and keeping Arizona’s drinking water clean. Apply by Sept. 30.
Orange Shirt Day Gathering: The Tucson Indian Center and the University of Arizona will host a memorial walk, lunch and speakers 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, at the UA Campus Store, 1209 E. University Blvd., honoring survivors of Indian boarding schools and the children who never returned home. Walk check-in starts at 8 a.m. Details.
The Pima Association of Governments is looking for volunteers to help with the annual Bicycle and Pedestrian Count, which runs Oct. 1-31 at intersections across the region. Volunteers commit 2-3 hours to track non-motorized travelers to inform local safety planning, and must watch a training video and sign a waiver beforehand. Sign up here.
