The Tucson City Council approved the canvass Tuesday for the primary election of two of the three primary election wards, confirming wins for Democrats Selina Barajas in Ward 5 and Miranda Schubert in Ward 6. Barajas won with 2,422 votes. Jesse Lugo received 1,353 while Christopher Elsner had 335. Schubert won with 6,376 votes, followed by Leighton Rockafellow Jr. with 2,931 and Jim Sinex with 365.
An east side Public Safety Town Hall is planned for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21 at the Ward 2 Office, 7820 E. Broadway. Speakers include Pima County Attorney Laura Conover, city council member Paul Cunningham, and Tucson Police Capt. Matthew Brady. RSVP by emailing ward2@tucsonaz.gov.Â
To support single-parent students pursuing higher education, Maricopa Community College has partnered with Save the Family Foundation of Arizona to build the Phoenix Scholar House, a housing and education program currently under construction in central Phoenix. Set to open in early 2006, the Scholar House will offer single-parent students affordable housing, on-site wraparound services and academic support under one roof. Learn more or apply here.Â
