About the candidate

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has more than 40 years of experience. He was first appointed as sheriff in 2015. He ran the next year and lost to Republican Mark Napier. He ran again — again against Napier — and won in 2020, taking office in January of the following year.

On his campaign website Nanos focuses on his accomplishments, including adding a new Vail sheriff’s department substation, doubling the number of school resource officers in middle and high schools and establishing a civilian advisory review board. He also mentions boosting morale and wages for his staff, focusing on “critical concerns” in the jail, and increasing the use of body-worn cameras.

June 2024 candidate forum

All of the candidates participated in a forum on June 17 hosted by the League of Women Voters of Greater Tucson and the Tucson Branch of the NAACP.

The candidates answered questions about racial and ethnic disparities in the criminal justice system, what they would do to increase the number of women and people of color on staff, their positions on deflection-to-treatment programs for people caught with drugs, and what they would do to restore public trust in the sheriff’s department.

The two Democratic candidates participated in a Jun 8 forum hosted by the Green Valley Democrats and the Tucson Sentinel.
