About the candidate
Terry Frederick is a private investigator and previously he worked as a deputy at the Pima County Sheriff’s Department from 2000 to 2004.
Frederick says he is running to become a “constitutional sheriff,” meaning he is part of a fringe political movement that sees county sheriffs as possessing the ultimate power within their territory as well as the ability to both interpret and nullify laws they view as unconstitutional.
Frederick wants to focus on building more transparency and accountability in the department by providing “clear and accessible financial reports to keep you informed about the office of the Pima County Sheriff’s budget and expenditures.” He also wants to collaborate with other law enforcement agencies and community partners to ensure public safety and take on both drug and human trafficking.
June 2024 candidate forum
All of the candidates participated in a forum on June 17 hosted by the League of Women Voters of Greater Tucson and the Tucson Branch of the NAACP.
The candidates answered questions about racial and ethnic disparities in the criminal justice system, what they would do to increase the number of women and people of color on staff, their positions on deflection-to-treatment programs for people caught with drugs, and what they would do to restore public trust in the sheriff’s department.
