Over the past several years, an increase in organizing efforts by mobile home residents in Pima County, led in part by a group called Poder Casas Moviles, has helped change the game for some manufactured home residents by eliciting action from the attorney general’s office.
Part 3 of a four-part documentary collaboration between Arizona Public Media and Arizona Luminaria, building on over a year of Luminaria’s coverage of heat and displacement in manufactured homes, looks at the work of that group and the steps state officials have taken to address some of the systemic issues long plaguing manufactured home communities.
Poder Casas Moviles has door knocked at parks all over the country, held resident meetings, spoken up at town halls and used theater to help residents protect themselves in eviction court.
And since the summer, Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes has sued two manufactured home parks for consumer fraud, alleging they failed to inform residents about their park’s unsuitable electric systems that led to regular electricity outages.
Part 3 of the series premiers Sunday, Nov. 16 on Arizona Illustrated on PBS 6 at 6:30 p.m. Watch Part 1 and 2 below.
