Arizona Senate President Warren Petersen and attorney Rodney Glassman clashed repeatedly in a Republican primary debate for Arizona attorney general, with both candidates questioning each other’s legal credentials and fitness for the office.
Petersen, who received his law license in December 2023, argued the attorney general’s role is one of leadership and policy management — areas where his legislative experience qualifies him — while Glassman, a lieutenant colonel in the Air Force JAG Corps Reserve and 17-year prosecutor, contended that leading the state’s largest law office requires someone who has actually practiced law.
The debate also covered immigration enforcement, water policy and the Colorado River compact, and devolved at times into personal attacks, including dueling allegations over endorsements, campaign finance violations and unverified criminal accusations.
The winner of the Republican primary election will face Democratic incumbent Kris Mayes, who is unopposed in her party’s primary.
Early voting begins June 24. Primary Election Day is July 21.
