🎶 Mutual aid group Community Care Tucson will be holding a fundraiser with food and live music on Oct. 3 at 8 p.m. The event will be hosted at Brickbox, 220 E. Broadway Blvd. Community care runs a regular distribution of food, clothes and hygiene supplies Wednesday 7 p.m. at Armory Park.
⏯️ Sen. Mark Kelly recently appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to discuss his personal experience with political violence, recounting the day his wife, former Rep. Gabby Giffords, was shot in 2011 while meeting with constituents in Tucson. He went on to defend free speech and encouraged people to take a break from social media. Watch the full interview here.
🌵 Who will speak for the cacti? The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is seeking public comments on the draft recovery plan for the endangered Fickeisen plains cactus and Peebles Navajo cactus, two closely related Northern Arizona plants. The recovery plan’s goal is to recover the cacti so they no longer need protection under the Endangered Species Act. Comment by Oct. 25.
đź’¸ Need help with IRS or tax disputes? Catholic Community Services of Southern Arizona is offering free legal consultation through its Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic. The program serves six Arizona counties, helping families navigate IRS proceedings, tax court, and more. Appointments are available now at 520-416-4759.
🗳️ The League of Women Voters of Greater Tucson will host a public forum on the Plan Tucson 2025 ballot measure Saturday, Oct. 11, from 11 a.m. to noon at Quincie Douglas Library, 1585 E. 36th St. The event will also stream live on the league’s Facebook page, with a recording later on YouTube.
📦 Help our most vulnerable by assembling care packages with the Multidisciplinary Outreach Team through the City of Tucson. Sign up to volunteer on the following Saturdays from 9-11 a.m. — Oct. 18, Nov. 15, and Dec. 13. The team distributes care packages year-round to our most vulnerable neighbors.
✏️ O’odham language coaches are being sought to support O’odham Ñiok class instructors and learners this fall through the Phoenix Indian Center. Teaching experience is not required to be a coach, however, coaches must be conversationally fluent and able to read and write in O’odham. Coaches must also be available to attend weekly classes on Monday and Wednesday evenings for five consecutive weeks beginning Oct. 27 either in person at locations in Maricopa County or via Zoom. Resumes and letters of interest for the part-time role, which pays up to $125 an hour, are due Oct. 10 to Elicia Goodsoldier at egoodsoldier@phxindcenter.org.
