JoAnna Mendoza, the Democratic challenger for the closely contested Congressional District 6, canvassed with supporters on Tuesday afternoon in Casas Adobes.

Mendoza, a U.S. Marines veteran, thanked a group of about a dozen volunteers before taking off to knock on doors, with just hours until polls officially closed.

“We are going to win, I am confident of it, that we’re going to win, because we have to,” she said. “Failure is not an option, and Marines fight to win.”

Mendoza is facing off against GOP Rep. Juan Ciscomani, the two term incumbent. Election results in this congressional district have been tight. But Mendoza and Democrats are optimistic that the seat will flip this time, giving their party control of the House.

“This election cycle will be historic,” she said. “People will be talking about this decades from now.”
