After a contentious race that included a lawsuit and multiple cross-partisan endorsements, the Pima County sheriff race between incumbent Chris Nanos and challenger Heather Lappin was so tight it’s headed for a recount.
Nanos, a Democrat who ran for his first election as sheriff in 2016, won 495 more votes than Republican Heather Lappin, according to Pima County unofficial results as of Nov. 17 with 100% of the votes counted. The county board of supervisors is expected to vote Thursday on the canvass of the election and on a recount.

On Thursday, the Associated Press called the District 4 race for incumbent Republican Steve Christy who was edging out Democrat Vanessa Bechtol by less than 6,000 votes.
In the race for District 3 Pima County Board of Supervisors, the winner is Jennifer Allen, a Democrat and former executive director for ACLU Arizona. She defeated Republican candidate Janet Wittenbraker.
Allen told the crowd at an election results watch party that she hoped she would perfect her role as “the nerd” of the board of supervisors.
She leaned on her past as an organizer, talking about how she and her team knocked on about 17,000 doors during her campaign. She said she heard from people that they want the “freedom to choose” their reproductive rights, the freedom to choose their future, and they want “dignity for people crossing the border.”
Wittenbraker said she’ll continue her focus on local politics by supporting candidates in Tucson city council wards 3, 5 and 6 in the 2025 election cycle. That will include supporting candidates who have new ideas for engaging on issues of homelessness and drug use.
“It’s time for the grown-ups to come back to the table and enforce our laws with compassion,” she said.
Iman-Utopia Layjou Bah, the independent candidate for District 3, had less than 5% of the votes as of Friday when AP called the race.
