The U.S. Department of Justice and Department of the Interior filed a condemnation action Friday to transfer more than 45,000 acres of Arizona state trust land to the federal government to be held in trust for the Hopi Tribe. The transfer, which will occur after the Hopi Tribe deposits $8.4 million in estimated compensation with a federal court, is the second in a series of actions expected to bring more than 270,000 acres into unified tribal ownership under the Navajo-Hopi Land Dispute Settlement Act of 1996. That statistic is according to the 2026 Dangerous by Design report, a project by Smart Growth America, a D.C-based nonprofit advocating for equitable growth policies. It takes political will and reallocating space, and often slowing down, roadways to make streets safer for pedestrians, said the study’s authors, but there is often little political will. Last year, Tucson was the third deadliest metro area in the nation for pedestrians.
